New York, New words, Urban Word, we did that too...

I spent this past weekend in New York again, as is my habit every other weekend since my birthday. New York has a stunning variety of activities which can appeal to all vectors of society. That's what it's appeal is. I frequently here people talk about how fast this city's life is, truth be told , i haven't noticed at all yet. Perhaps blinded somewhere between the skyscrapers and light of my girlfriends eyes, as she is the reason i visit; I find myself immune to the sycophants and dissidents who both admire and detest the city in so many protestations and praises. I have seen the city with my own eyes wide open. Seen its limitations, its boundless appeal.

Urban Word, I'd never heard of it until recently, is the art of spoken word performed by high school students. Essentially its Def Poetry, for the under aged. Washington Irving high school, on the lower east side, played host to the final for the Urban Word competition. Showcasing nearly 30 "slam" poets all younger than 20, the event was split into two rounds. Each one performed their original poem, with no evident stipulations of any kind. I expected to hear poems ranging in different topics, so it was quite a surprise when the subject matter for the majority of the poems was extremely dark brooding material. Of course it was witty.
